California's Zone 0 rules cover the first five feet around a structure. For fences and gates, the requirement is straightforward: what touches your house cannot be something that burns.

What California Zone 0 actually says about fences
On August 19, 2026, the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection approved the final draft of the statewide Zone 0 regulation. Three provisions apply to fencing:
1. No combustible fence or gate attached to a structure. A wood fence bolted to the side of a house is a fuel path leading directly to the wall.
2. A five-foot noncombustible span at the point of attachment. Any fence or gate that attaches to a structure, or comes within one foot of it, needs five feet of noncombustible material starting at the point of attachment or the closest point.
3. No new combustible fence within five feet of a structure after the rule takes effect. On the Local Responsibility Area track, this now covers fences running parallel to the structure, not only ones attached to it.
Repairs to an existing combustible fence may still use combustible materials.
Where the rule stands right now
The regulation is an approved final draft, not a rule in force. It goes to the Office of Administrative Law for review, then a five-day public comment window, then filing with the Secretary of State. There is no statewide effective date as of August 26, 2026.
Fence and gate obligations sit in the later compliance phase. For existing structures, that is three years from the effective date on the LRA track, or up to five years on the SRA track, on a timeline your local fire agency sets. New construction complies on the effective date itself.
Some jurisdictions have moved ahead of the state. The City of San Diego adopted its own Zone 0 ordinance effective February 28, 2026. Check your own parcel and your local fire authority before planning work.

Does it apply to my property?
The rule applies in State Responsibility Areas and in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones within Local Responsibility Areas. Within our delivery area that includes large parts of Los Gatos, Saratoga, Monte Sereno, Almaden Valley, the East Foothills, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Scotts Valley, Boulder Creek, Felton, Woodside, Portola Valley, and the Fremont and Milpitas hills.
Look up your parcel on the CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone viewer, then confirm with your city or county fire department. Local agencies may adopt standards stricter than the state baseline.
What counts as noncombustible
Three terms get used interchangeably in fencing marketing and they mean different things:

The Zone 0 rule text uses noncombustible. Metals meet that description. Wood, vinyl, and composite do not, regardless of any treatment or coating.
One thing worth being straight about: no fencing product in California carries a state fire approval. The State Fire Marshal's Building Materials Listing program covers decking, windows, siding, doors, and under-eave products. There is no fencing category. Any supplier claiming a CAL FIRE-approved or state-certified fence is describing something that does not exist. What we can tell you is that structural aluminum does not burn.
Three situations, three solutions
Your fence attaches to the house
You need five feet of noncombustible fence starting where it meets the wall. You do not need to replace the entire run. One aluminum panel and a post at the attachment point satisfies the requirement, and the rest of the fence can stay as it is.

A wood gate sits against the wall
Side-yard gates are the most common attachment point on a residential lot, and the easiest fix. A QuickScreen aluminum pedestrian gate replaces it directly, in a slat pattern that reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a patch.
Your fence runs parallel, inside five feet
Under the LRA track of the approved text, new combustible fence is not permitted within five feet of a structure whether attached or parallel. If you are planning new fence along the side of a house on a narrow lot, build that run in aluminum from the start.

Questions
Do I have to replace my whole fence? No. The requirement is a five-foot noncombustible span measured from the point where the fence meets the structure. The rest of the fence line is unaffected, and fences more than five feet from a structure are outside the rule entirely.
Is this required right now? No. The regulation is an approved final draft pending review by the Office of Administrative Law. There is no statewide effective date, and fence obligations fall in the later compliance phase, three to five years after that date. Local jurisdictions may have their own timelines.
Can I repair my existing wood fence? Yes. The approved text expressly permits repairs to an existing combustible fence using combustible replacement materials. The restriction applies to new fence within five feet of a structure.
Why aluminum instead of steel? Both are noncombustible. Aluminum will not rust, weighs far less to handle and install, and the slat systems come in privacy configurations that steel picket and ornamental lines do not. If you want steel, chain link, or ornamental iron, we stock those too.
Will a metal fence look out of place on my house? The slat profiles are an architectural product, not a utility fence. If you are only replacing the five feet at the house, we will help you pick a profile and finish that reads as intentional against the existing fence.
Do you install? No. We only supply materials and do not keep of list of recommended installers.
Do you deliver? Yes, throughout Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Alameda counties. Will-call pickup is also available at the San Jose warehouse.
